I am currently starting my next phase of professional life involving being a CTO as a Service for two startups, initially. One thing than any company needs is basic IT infrastructure. Based on my experiences the last 7 years in LetsBuild and talking to various other people in my network, the following systems form the cornerstone of the companies

  • Google Workspace - Email, Calendar
    • When setting up mail, it’s important to setup SPF, DKIM and DMARC to avoid that the mail lands in receiver’s spam. It’s not that hard to do, around an hour including figuring out how to do it (involved a little google setup and some DNS records to be added)
  • DNS - I use gratisdns.dk, but namecheap.com or one.com would probably be just as fine. For IT product domains, I would probably use route53 in AWS since it can be properly managed with infrastructure as code either using terraform or cloudformation.
  • slack - internal chat system
  • zoom - video calling - in my experience, they have the best video quality and if you have a lot of meetings remotely (due to covid eg these days), it does fatigue you less. If you don’t have it, buy a proper quality headset with noice cancellation and a good microphone. Jabra works for me, but many things are OK, just make sure you get something that works.
  • gather.town - for remote conferences or friday bars

The company was previously known as Hingston + Co. but has been given a complete rebrand — including a new logo, tap badges, website and branded material — by London-based design studio & Smith. The new identity is based on the Kandinsky abstract painting, Black Lines, and true to its name, is mostly black and white with a few flashes of colour. According to & Smith, the identity brings together “art and science” and has been brought to life through collaborations with nine illustrators.

Black Lines wants it to be as easy to serve a Negroni as it is a pint of lager. The drinks company is seeking to revolutionise the bar experience by serving cocktails by draught with a changing menu of drinks (as well as same favourite stand-bys). A pink grapefruit spritz was served through the summer while a new pear and white tea fizz joins the line-up for winter.
